Right from the beginning, when Doneyln Gamble and Helen Andersen met through a mutual friend, in a raspberry patch, of all places, they knew it wasn’t a chance encounter. Although they had individual stories to tell, they had a lot in common. Donelyn and her husband, Mike, and Helen and her husband, Pete, were in the midst of parenting children who were struggling. In fact, Erik Andersen and Anna Gamble, their children, were in the same at Roosevelt High School.

LOUISVILLE — The two top leaders of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) have sent a letter to church, praising those who have responded to the disasters that have struck Myanmar (Burma), China and the United States and asking all Presbyterians to pray for those who have been affected.

Moderator's Musings May 2008

Last Sunday was Pentecost, and I had the privilege of reading the Acts 2 passage at St. Andrew church. The passage includes a listing of all the many nationalities that were represented by the people who were in Jerusalem for Passover: Parthians, Medes, Elamites, etc. It can be a daunting passage to read (finally all those years of Sunday School paid off!), but it reminded me that at the very beginning of the church, there were people of many races, colors, tongues and homelands who listened to Peter's message and became followers of Christ.

Feeling the Spirit Move

 During my study leave on the Washington coast I noticed a kite flying. It was so playful soaring up and down and sideways. As I reflected on this kite it occurred to me it is a great metaphor for the church. In the old fashion kite we have a cross made of thin sticks that give the kite it’s foundational form. The cross is the foundation symbol for the church. Christ is the foundation, purpose, and central focus of the church. Without Christ we would be just another organization doing good in our world.

Jerry Poole's last note to the Seattle Presbytery

Unless I am surprised, this will be my last eNews article to you. Officially my term as your Interim Executive Presbyter ended on Wednesday April 30. On Thursday May 1, Scott Lumsden assumed his duties as Executive Presbyter. He has been in San Francisco attending a Board of Pensions sponsored update. I'll be providing orientation for him during May.
My twenty months with you has sped by in a blur. The EPNC was right when they advised that this is a two person job. Boyd Stockdale knew it as well but somehow soldiered on as he was able. If you want Scott to be successful you will help find and fund a partner for him.
I have found my work among you in the presbytery to be a high privilege. Advising committees, overseeing the presbytery office and serving as a pastor to our pastors and elders has been a joy. I've been inspired by the ministry of our congregations and ethnic fellowships. This work has been the most enjoyable and engaging of any I have done in my twenty-eight (almost) years since ordination.

Rev. Dr. David Dobler Called as Presbytery Administrator for Presbytery of Alaska

Please join us in welcoming Rev. Dr. David Dobler as our new Presbytery Administrator. Rev. Dobler, President of Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, has accepted the part-time permanent position as of May 1, 2008, and will be employed by both locations until further notice.
We look forward to Rev. Dobler joining the Presbytery of Alaska Office.
